Choose your visit around the time you have available. The lookout suits a short stop; a booked mine tour needs a larger place in your itinerary.

Lookout access information checked 27 September 2026. Operational requirements can change access at short notice.
Getting to the lookout
Follow the signed public approach from Goldfields Highway to Mount Monger Road. Set your navigation to the public Super Pit Lookout, rather than a mine office, gate or industrial address.
Use the designated parking and viewing areas. Keep children with you, stay behind barriers and follow any instructions at the entrance. Allow time to return to your vehicle before the published closing time.
If you need step-free access, accessible toilets or space for a large vehicle, ask about the current arrangements before making a special trip. The brief operator page does not provide enough detail to promise every facility.
Taking a Super Pit tour
KCGM's current tour notice confirms that public tours have resumed, using a revised route that includes an internal lookout. Mine access is arranged through the authorised operator; your own vehicle cannot follow the tour into controlled areas.
Check the available departure for your travel date before organising the rest of your day. A tour's advertised duration is not the whole time you need: allow for reaching the departure point, checking in and returning afterwards.
The booking operator currently requires long sleeves, long trousers, enclosed shoes and socks. Its website identifies the departure point as 250 Hannan Street in St Barbara's Square. Follow the requirements in your booking confirmation, and ask about children's eligibility, mobility needs and boarding arrangements before paying.
Tour routes can change with mine operations. Book for the guided experience and the views available on the day. Check the current product description for inclusions, prices and cancellation terms.
What you are looking at
The formal name is the Fimiston Open Pit. It forms part of Northern Star's KCGM Operations, alongside underground mines and processing facilities.
The stepped sides are called benches. Look for the roads connecting the working levels and use the moving equipment to judge distance. A truck can look surprisingly small against the excavation, which is why a wide photograph and a closer view tell different parts of the story.
The Golden Mile's gold-mining history began with the 1890s rush. Separate mining interests were brought together in 1989, creating the basis for the large consolidated operation. The present mine includes both open-pit and underground activity; a prediction about when the pit will stop growing is not necessary to understand a visit.

Can you watch a blast?
Occasionally, visitors may see blasting from an available viewing area. Timing and visibility depend on operations, weather and access arrangements.
Check for a current announcement from KCGM or ask your tour operator. An old event listing or another traveller's experience is not a timetable for your visit. If a blast is announced, allow for a delay or cancellation and follow the instructions given at the site.
The lookout is still worth considering without a blast. The excavation, machinery and relationship between the mine and the surrounding city are the main reasons to go.
Photography and comfort
Start with a wide view, then look for machinery, ramps and shadows that show the scale. A phone is useful for the full scene; optical zoom helps with distant detail. Light changes with cloud, season and your position, so avoid building the day around a promised sun angle.
Bring drinking water, a hat and sun protection. Wind can make a short outdoor visit less comfortable than the forecast temperature suggests. Keep equipment secure and take photographs from permitted visitor areas.
Make it a half-day
Pair the lookout with Hannans North Tourist Mine for mining exhibits, historic buildings and large machinery you can examine more closely. Check its separate admission arrangements and seasonal hours.
Alternatively, spend time in Boulder or follow the broader things-to-do guide. A short lookout visit can fit around lunch or another attraction, but leave room for travel between stops.
Practical FAQ
Common questions
Is the Super Pit lookout free?
Tourism WA lists the public lookout as free. Organised mine tours are separately booked experiences.
Can I visit without taking a tour?
Yes, through the public lookout when it is open. A lookout visit does not permit access to the mine itself.
Do tours go to the bottom?
The booking operator's FAQ says they do not go to the bottom. Check the current tour description for the route and viewing arrangements.
Should I wait for a particular blast time?
Only plan around a current operator announcement, and keep the rest of your day flexible.
Where should I check before leaving?
Use the KCGM lookout page for public access and Kalgoorlie Tours and Charters for bookings.
