Kalgoorlie to Laverton Road Trip

Quick route overview

The drive can be divided into three practical stages:

• Kalgoorlie to Menzies: about 130 kilometres.
• Menzies to Leonora: about 100 kilometres.
• Leonora to Laverton: about 124 to 130 kilometres.

Menzies works well as the first proper break. Leonora is the best place for lunch, supplies and a visit to Gwalia. Laverton is the destination rather than another quick roadside stop.

Leaving Kalgoorlie

Leave Kalgoorlie early enough to reach Laverton in daylight. This matters even more if you plan to visit Gwalia, walk around Menzies or stop for lunch in Leonora.

Fill the tank, carry drinking water and check the spare tyre before leaving town. Download maps while you still have reliable reception. Mobile coverage becomes less dependable between towns, so do not make continuous reception part of the safety plan.

The highway north quickly leaves Kalgoorlie's suburban and mining traffic behind. The country becomes more open, with long straight sections, low woodland, mine access roads and regular heavy vehicles. Keep a safe distance from road trains and avoid sitting directly behind them while waiting for an overtaking opportunity.

Optional stop at Broad Arrow

Broad Arrow is approximately 38 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie and is the easiest early stop. The remaining buildings, old railway infrastructure and Broad Arrow Tavern make it useful for visitors who have not already made the shorter Kalgoorlie to Broad Arrow road trip.

Do not spend too long here if you also intend to explore Menzies and Gwalia. Laverton is still several hours away.

Menzies

Menzies is approximately 130 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie on the Goldfields Highway. It is the first town where it makes sense to park, stretch your legs and have a proper look around. The Shire describes the Kalgoorlie-Menzies section as a maintained sealed road.

The historic buildings and wide Shenton Street give Menzies a strong sense of its gold-rush past. The Visitor Centre is the practical place to ask about current local conditions, food, fuel and any planned detours.

Fuel arrangements can change, so check the live route table and confirm current local availability before depending on a particular product or time.

Should you add Lake Ballard?

Lake Ballard is one of the best-known attractions in the Northern Goldfields, but it is not a small roadside detour. It lies about 51 kilometres west of Menzies, meaning more than 100 additional kilometres for the return to town.

Adding Lake Ballard, Gwalia and Laverton to one day would make the itinerary rushed and could push the final section into darkness. Visit Lake Ballard as part of a separate Kalgoorlie to Menzies road trip or stay overnight and continue north the next morning.

Menzies to Leonora

North of Menzies, the road feels more remote even though it remains an important route for mining, pastoral and regional traffic. Expect long distances without shops or formal stopping facilities.

Wildlife is more difficult to see around dawn and dusk. Glare, fatigue and the apparent simplicity of a straight road can also become problems. Stop in a safe place before you become tired rather than waiting for the next town.

Kookynie and Niagara Dam are worthwhile parts of the wider Golden Quest Discovery Trail, but they are not direct highway stops. Adding them changes the trip into a longer touring route with additional road-condition considerations. The official Golden Quest itinerary treats these places as part of a multi-day journey rather than quick diversions.

Leonora

Leonora is approximately 230 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie and is the main service centre on this journey. It is the best place to refuel, buy supplies and take a longer break before turning east toward Laverton.

Tower Street has shops, fuel, accommodation and surviving Goldfields buildings. Visitors with limited time can stop in Leonora for lunch and continue to Laverton. Visitors with a few extra hours should go to Gwalia.

Gwalia Ghost Town and Museum

Gwalia is about 3 kilometres from Leonora town centre and is the strongest heritage stop on the Kalgoorlie to Laverton route. The former mining settlement preserves miners' cottages, shops, camps and mine buildings connected with the Sons of Gwalia mine.

The museum precinct includes Hoover House, the mine precinct, historic equipment and the remains of the townsite. The Shire recommends allowing a couple of hours to explore the museum, mine precinct and Hoover House properly.

Gwalia is not a fifteen-minute roadside attraction. A proper visit can easily turn the Kalgoorlie-Laverton drive into a full day. Check current opening information before departure, particularly around public holidays and the Christmas-New Year period.

A realistic timing decision

• Direct travel day: stop briefly in Menzies, have lunch or refuel in Leonora, then continue to Laverton.
• Heritage travel day: leave Kalgoorlie early, stop in Menzies, spend two or more hours at Gwalia, and arrive in Laverton later in the afternoon.
• Two-day road trip: stay in Leonora or Laverton and give Gwalia, Leonora and the destination proper time.

Trying to include Broad Arrow, Menzies, Lake Ballard, Kookynie, Gwalia and Laverton in one day does not create a better trip. It creates a long checklist and a greater chance of driving tired or after dark.

Leonora to Laverton

The final section follows Leonora-Laverton Road for approximately 124 to 130 kilometres. This is still working mining country, and travellers should expect heavy vehicles, mine access traffic and long open sections.

The landscape gradually changes as you approach Laverton and the edge of the Great Victoria Desert. The road passes through country associated with active and former mining operations. Do not enter mine roads, tracks or signed restricted areas simply because they appear on an online map.

There are optional Golden Quest sites around Mount Morgans, Murrin Murrin and Windarra, but some involve side roads and more detailed navigation. Check current access information before leaving the main route.

Route names to recognise: Goldfields Highway, Leonora Laverton Road, Northern Goldfields, Great Beyond Visitor Centre and Outback Way.

Arriving in Laverton

Make the Great Beyond Visitor Centre your first visitor stop when current opening times allow. It contains the Explorers Hall of Fame, local travel information, maps, a gift shop and a cafe. It is also an important source of information for travellers planning to continue beyond Laverton.

Laverton is more than a fuel stop at the western end of the Outback Way. Its visitor attractions include historic sites, the old police precinct, the cemetery, local Aboriginal art, the Windarra area and the town's mining and exploration history.

Give yourself time to walk around rather than immediately preparing for another long drive.

Eating and staying in Laverton

The Shire lists local food, hotel, motel, caravan and other visitor services, but opening days, kitchen times and room availability can change. Check the current Shire information and contact accommodation directly before travelling.

Carry some backup food from Kalgoorlie or Leonora. This is normal preparation for regional travel. A delayed arrival or changed kitchen time should not leave you without dinner.

Book ahead during mining activity, regional events and school-holiday periods. Room availability in a small mining town can change quickly.

One-day direct drive

1. Leave Kalgoorlie early.
2. Stop in Menzies for fuel, a break or a short walk.
3. Continue to Leonora for lunch and supplies.
4. Make a short visit to Gwalia only if your departure and museum timing allow it.
5. Reach Laverton with daylight remaining.

This is the best plan for travellers using Laverton as their destination or preparing for a later remote journey.

Two-day heritage trip

Day one: Kalgoorlie to Menzies, then Leonora and Gwalia. Stay in Leonora or continue to booked accommodation in Laverton.

Day two: Explore Laverton, visit the Great Beyond Visitor Centre and look at local heritage sites.

This version gives Gwalia enough time and avoids turning every stop into a hurried photograph.

Longer Northern Goldfields journey

Combine Kalgoorlie, Menzies, Leonora, Gwalia and Laverton with selected parts of the Golden Quest Discovery Trail over several days.

Use current road reports before adding Lake Ballard, Kookynie, Niagara Dam or minor historic routes. The complete Golden Quest itinerary includes sealed and unsealed sections and is promoted as a multi-day journey.

Continuing beyond Laverton

Do not present the road east from Laverton as an ordinary continuation of this highway trip.

Laverton is the western starting point of the Outback Way and Great Central Road. Main Roads WA says 736 kilometres of the Western Australian Great Central Road section remains unsealed while staged upgrades continue. Remote-road preparation is required, and permits are needed for travel through Aboriginal lands.

Anyone continuing east should speak with the Great Beyond Visitor Centre, obtain the necessary permits, confirm fuel availability, check road reports and carry suitable communication and recovery equipment.

Reaching Laverton in a normal car does not mean the same vehicle and preparation are suitable for the road beyond it.

Is the Kalgoorlie to Laverton drive worth it?

Yes, particularly for visitors interested in the Goldfields beyond Kalgoorlie.

Menzies gives the journey an early gold-rush town stop. Leonora provides practical services. Gwalia is one of the region's strongest preserved mining settlements, and Laverton has its own exploration, Aboriginal and mining history.

The trip works best when it is allowed to be a journey rather than treated as a fast transfer. Leave early, keep the detours realistic and arrive with enough daylight to see where you have come.
