About Kalgoorlie.info in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia

Kalgoorlie.info is a free, independent guide to Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the WA Goldfields. Where to go, where to kip for the night, the long haul in from Perth, plus live fuel prices, the weather, public holidays and a map, all in the one place.

It's built to load quick and to keep working when the reception gives up on you. You can also pop it on your phone like an app, so the stuff you actually need comes along for the ride, signal or not.

Stick it on your phone like an app

You can install this site straight from your browser. No app store, no account, and barely anything to download. Once it's on there it opens from its own icon, runs full screen like a normal app, and keeps the handy pages working even when you're out of range.

What's in it for you

  • It works with no signal. The home page and anything you've already opened still come up when the bars vanish, so fuel prices, emergency contacts and public holidays are right there when you're a fair way from the nearest town.
  • It opens like a proper app. Tap the icon and it's full screen, no mucking about with the address bar, and it's quicker than typing the whole thing in every time.
  • No app store, no bloat. Nothing to grab from a store, it won't eat your storage, and it quietly updates itself, so you're always on the latest version.
  • No sign-up, nothing nosy. No account, no login, no catch. Installing it just drops a shortcut and a small offline copy onto your own device.

How to put it on

Find your gadget below. The whole thing takes about as long as the kettle.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open kalgoorlie.info in Safari. (It has to be Safari on Apple gear, sorry.)
  2. Tap the Share button, the little square with an arrow pointing up. It's down the bottom on an iPhone, up the top on an iPad.
  3. Scroll down the list and tap Add to Home Screen.
  4. Tap Add in the corner. The Kalgoorlie.info icon's now sitting on your home screen.

Android phones and tablets

  1. Open kalgoorlie.info in Chrome.
  2. If a little banner pops up offering to add it to your home screen, tap that. If not, tap the menu (three dots, top right).
  3. Tap Install app, or Add to Home screen.
  4. Tap Install. It'll land on your home screen and in your app drawer.

Windows and Mac computers

  1. Open kalgoorlie.info in Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
  2. Look for the little install icon at the right-hand end of the address bar and give it a click. No icon there? Open the browser menu and pick Install instead (on Edge it's tucked under Apps, then Install this site as an app).
  3. Click Install. It opens in its own window, and you can pin it to the taskbar or dock.

Making it work offline

Once it's installed, open it one time while you've still got signal. That gives it a chance to tuck away the home page and the basics in the background. After that the important bits load with no reception at all, and whenever you're back in range a quick refresh pulls in the freshest fuel prices and weather.

Getting rid of it

Had a gutful? Get rid of it like any other app. On a phone, press and hold the icon and choose Remove or Uninstall. On a computer, open it, open its menu and pick Uninstall. The website stays right where it was in your browser, no harm done.
