Check before departure and again from a safe stopping place if weather or conditions change. A downloaded map helps with navigation but cannot tell you that a road has reopened.

Use Main Roads alongside the local report. A Shire report covers its own area and may refer you elsewhere for a highway or an adjoining section. Longer trips can cross several road authorities.
Read the whole notice
Look for the road name, the start and end of the affected section, the permitted vehicle types and any time restrictions. Similar names can refer to different roads: the main Leonora–Laverton route and Old Laverton Road should not be treated as interchangeable.
Check the authority's update date. A report can remain in force after the day it was issued; an older date is a reason to read its review information or contact the authority if uncertain. It is not permission to ignore a closure. A fresh page retrieval also does not mean every individual road was inspected that day.
If the published information and conditions at the road disagree, follow closure signs and official instructions. Do not use a navigation app's suggested shortcut to bypass a restriction.
After rain, during fire weather or in extreme heat
Do not drive into floodwater or past a road-closed sign. If your route is affected, seek an authorised alternative or postpone the journey. Read DFES flood travel advice.
Before a camping trip, check the campsite's rules, current fire restrictions and emergency information. The presence of a fire ring does not mean a fire is allowed that day.
In hot weather, reduce exposed walking and allow for extra drinking water, rest and changes of plan. A pleasant forecast in Esperance does not describe conditions on the inland drive there.
Fuel and communications
Use FuelWatch to compare available reported prices, then check the station you intend to use for its fuel grade and opening arrangements. A price listing is not a stock guarantee.
Download route maps before leaving reliable coverage. Carry charging options, drinking water and the supplies your vehicle and passengers need. For remote side trips, plan how you will seek help if mobile reception is unavailable and tell someone your intended route and return time.
